Calgon Take Me Away – 10 Ways to Relieve Stress

Every single person I know has some sort of stress in their life.  Whether it is from work, money problems, health problems, parenthood issues, struggles in relationships…the perils of stress creep up on us so quickly, sometimes we have no idea how we got to the point of complete pandemonium.  If you are anything like me, your levels of stress vary with things happening in your life.  Right now, my stress level is at an all time high, so finding little ways to combat it is essential for my sanity and the sanity of those around me.  I know there are tons of suggestions and products out there to help you unwind, but I thought I’d list a few good ones that I like just to help jumpstart your journey back to blue skies and happy thoughts again.  Sometimes all we need is a little push in the right direction to get back on track.

  1. EXCERCISE – We all know this one but rarely turn to it when we’ve had a really bad day.  Next time when your stress level hits the limit, try taking a walk or jog.  If you’re a gym person, make a pit stop there on your way home from work.  Just a little bit of excercise will help you release stress and brighten your mood.
  2. LAUGHTER – Laughter does wonders for the soul.  When you feel down and out, watch a funny movie or tv show.  If you need to get out of the house, choose to surround yourself with people who make you smile and laugh, not bring you down more.
  3. LEARN TO SAY NO! – Some people are just born ‘yes’ people, which can cause a lot of stress with time management, having to deal with other people’s problems or their workloads.  Take the time to evaluate your daily situations and understand it is OK to say NO!  When stress levels are high, you have to step back and re-energize yourself.  Always remember that in order to help others, you yourself have to be in a positive place.
  4. HERBAL TEAS – There are many herbal teas on the market to help you relax.  You can also find ones that will help eliminate toxins from your body which can assist in making you feel happier AND healthier.  I recommend visiting your local health food store as a start and take a look at what they have to offer.  In my house, we drink Ginseng Peppermint tea with drops of Passion Flower and Ginseng extracts in it to aid in the de-stressing process.  Works like a charm!
  5. FIND A HOBBY – Hobbies are a great way to focus on yourself and away from the stressors in your life.  I know finding the time or the energy for something new can be difficult, but give it a try.  Even an hour a week doing something you enjoy can make a world of difference.
  6. MIND OVER MATTER – During my most stressful times, I find that if I let myself get sucked into all the negatives I’m dealing with, more negatives will develop.  Be strong mentally and even on your darkest days, tell yourself that you are going to fight back and stay positive.  It’s amazing how quickly things will seem a bit brighter.
  7. SEX – Don’t want to take a walk or find a new hobby?  Then head to the bedroom.  Sex is one of the greatest stress relievers.  The deep breathing, touching, the release of endorphins…all of these actions are fun, make you happy and of course…help you relax.
  8. GET ORGANIZED – Many times, one stressful thing will hatch many more stressors due to poor organization and sheer avoidance of the underlying problem.  It is best to address your daily stressors and then tackle them head on.  If your evening schedule is overwhelming, figure out ways to manage what you need to get done.  Whether it’s prepping weekly dinners on the weekends or getting up early to work out rather than trying to fit it in after work…re-organizing daily stressors puts you back in charge of your life and helps from sweating the small stuff.
  9. COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS – As busy and stressful as our lives can get, it’s no wonder we tend to focus on the negatives rather than the positives.  When stress gets high, sit down for 5 minutes and write down 10 things that you are grateful for having in your life.  Whatever you feel blessed for…whether it be your family, your health, or a new vehicle you just purchased…write it down and think about the positive things in your life and stop focusing on just the negatives.
  10. ENJOY LIFE – Life is short and each day is something we should cherish and enjoy.  When the going gets tough, the tough need to laugh in the face of stress and just roll with the punches.  Remember, each day is a new day full of wonder and amazing possibilities, so don’t waste them letting stress dictate your life!  LIVE, LAUGH, LOVE AND ENJOY
