Embrace Your Inner GREEN

Since today is Earth Day, I thought my writing should take a ‘green’ focus.  The environment is not something I specialize in, but for as long as I can remember, it has been something I cared about.  Whether giving money to save the whales or recycling bottles, I’ve always made some sort of effort over the years.  As time has passed, my concerns with the environment have changed slightly though.  No longer is it just about having the knowledge of environmental issues, it is now more about preservation.  Not only preservation of the land and the water and the animals, but preservation of myself, my family and my income.

We constantly read in the newspapers and hear on the news about the environmental damages we have been inflicting on our planet over the years.  For most people, knowing about these issues and doing something about them are two completely different things.  I don’t think this is a deliberate reaction.  I think deep down many people assume their contributions (no matter how big or how small) won’t make any difference in the grand scheme of things.  Not only that, words like ‘organic’ and ‘energy efficient upgrades’ and ‘hybrid’ can sometimes scare people off because for many, it means more money out of their pockets.  Extra money that most people don’t have.

But do not despair my fellow humans!  There is a light at the end of the tunnel and the little initiatives people make to become more green DO make a difference!  No longer do we live in a time when being green is an alternative way of life.  It is now the norm.  So here are some ideas of how YOU can embrace your inner green that is struggling to be set free…not only to help the environment, but to ensure a brighter future for you and your loved ones. HAPPY EARTH DAY!

  • LED Light Bulbs –  These light bulbs are the way to go.   Their life span is around 50,000 hours (possibly more depending on the brand).  In this same amount of time you will buy over 50 regular incandescent bulbs or 5 compact florescent bulbs. Make the change!
  • Reusable Grocery Bags – There are tons of websites and probably your own grocery stores sell reusable grocery bags.  This is such an inexpensive way to be more green.
  • Water Filters – Having filtered water in your refrigerator or on your sink at home is a great way to get clean water without having to buy cases of plastic bottles.
  • Reusable Water Bottles – Get your water filter set up at home and then purchase a few reusable water bottles for everyone in your family to use.  There are so many on the market today and so many designs, you can’t help but enjoy using them.
  • Home Energy Audits – Energy audits are a great way to assess how much energy your home uses and it helps outline ways you can make your house more energy efficient…which equals saving you money and making the value of your home go up.
  • Marathon Electric Water Heater – If you have a little extra money to do some upgrades in your house, this is a great time to do it.  With all the federal and state rebates and other tax incentives, you can actually save a lot of money and increase the worth of your home at the same time.  The Marathon Electric Water Heater is a great place to begin…it’s energy efficient, reasonably priced and best of all it gets you away from fossil fuels.
  • Acadia Combined Heating & Cooling System – This revolutionary heat pump manufactured by Hallowell International does heating and cooling for your home in one system.  It’s one of the most energy efficient systems on the market today and can keep these high efficiencies even when the temperature drops below zero.  To top it off, putting this system in your home not only will save you money, but it will let you leave that volatile fossil fuel market behind since it is powered by efficient electricity!  Check out their website to find a dealer near you.
